Senegal
Senegal is a country of 12 million people. It is home to more than a dozen ethnic groups, the largest being the Wolof, who live mostly in the west. Colonized by the French, the country achieved independence in 1960. It has a long history of democracy, though, for the first 40 years after independence, it was ruled by the same party - the Parti socialiste (PS), which won due to its vast hold on the power. From 1981 to 2000, Abdou Diouf of the PS party was president. His opponent, Abdoulaye Wade, claimed fraudulent elections, and in 1991 Wade was brought into the government. Wade won the presidency in 2000 and 2007. In 2011 Macky Sall replaced him, winning the elections.
